I did tests with access databases once using the JdbcOdbc bridge.  I had
connection errors all over and I could track it to the single connection
nature of Access.  The first connection went through (the authentication),
but the second and following connections always failed.  I have dumped
Access as a test database platform and use MySQL.  There are plenty of GUIs
around to give you the flexibility of Access table creation.  There are
even free Access plugins.

If you are only using Access as a test database, why not use hsql? it works
very well, is very lightweight and is already configured.
