Position Summary

The Director of Digital Services is responsible for developing enterprise 
strategies for the stewardship of wide-ranging specialized digital content and 
formats with the goal of integrated collection discovery and unified digital 
preservation of the Wisconsin Historical Society’s unique collections. The 
Wisconsin Historical Society’s holdings make up one of the preeminent North 
American history collections in the country, with a library of more than 4 
million volumes, an archive of more than 105,000 cubic feet of manuscript 
collections, 25,000 maps and atlases, 3 million photographs, 750,000 three 
dimensional artifacts, and an extensive sound and moving image collection. The 
Society’s holdings include one of the largest newspapers and periodical 
collections in the country with a specialization in African-American newspapers 
and alternative serials publications that span the political spectrum. The 
Director of Digital Services leads a new section in promoting a collaborative 
environment that empowers staff to be creative problem-solvers while supporting 
and implementing inventive approaches to increase the capacity to manage 
digital content across WHS’s Collections Division.

Joining WHS during an exciting time of growth, transformation and innovation, 
the Director provides leadership in developing WHS’s new digital services unit 
charged with developing and implementing policies, procedures, and workflows 
for stewarding digitized and born-digital assets. The Director of Digital 
Services is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the digitization and 
audio and microfilm reformatting labs as well as the management of outsourced 
digitization projects and services with third-party vendors. The Director of 
Digital Services leads divisional teams in prioritizing and planning for system 
and tool implementation and migration planning within a developing digital 
asset management ecosystem (DAME) that advances digital access and engagement 
with a focus on discovery, interoperability, and sustainability. The Director 
serves as a digital enabler as well as a change agent who will collaborate with 
staff from across the Division in re-envisioning WHS’s culture of innovation by 
further defining a digital stewardship framework that will enhance the 
Society’s commitment to national collection building while democratizing access 
to WHS’s preeminent collection.

Qualifications 

Minimally qualified applicants will have all of the following: 

Experience overseeing the planning, coordination, prioritization, and 
management of in-house and outsourced digitization projects. 
Experience in developing and managing born-digital collections for a library, 
archive, or museum. 
Experience with financial management relating to the lifecycle management of 
digital collections including creating budgets, monitoring collection funds, 
and annual reporting. 
Experience supervising and managing staff (assigning work, creating performance 
evaluations, initiating staffing decisions). 

Well qualified applicants will also have at least one of the following:

Experience leading the implementation and/or migration plan for a digital asset 
management system.
Experience in developing a digital preservation program for a GLAM institution.
Experience with digital project management for a museum, archive, or library.
Experience with digital collections assessment, prioritization, and stewardship 
planning for distinctive collections.
