Libraries and Cultural Resources at the University of Calgary invites 
applications for a full-time Continuing position as Discovery and Systems 
Librarian at the rank of Assistant or Associate Librarian. The anticipated 
start date is January 1, 2020.

Appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate will be commensurate with 
qualifications and experience, taking into account relevant advanced degrees, 
quality and length of experience and quality and length of other related 
experience.

Libraries and Cultural Resources (LCR) is a leader in the development of 
innovative information resources and services, locally, nationally and 
internationally. In a converged environment, it successfully incorporates the 
resources and services of libraries, institutional and research archives, rare 
books and special collections, art galleries, and a university press to provide 
outstanding support for scholarship, learning, and the creation of knowledge.

This is an incredibly exciting time as LCR invests in its technological 
infrastructure and seeks new and innovative ways to actualize the digital in 
the Taylor Family Digital Library. In the past two years, LCR has implemented a 
new library management system and a new institutional repository. Currently LCR 
is seeking a digital asset management solution and a system for the University 
Press. Innovative user centric approaches such as book lockers are being sought 
and implemented. The use and application of artificial intelligence is becoming 
increasingly important. 

The Discovery and Systems Librarian will play a central role in identifying and 
implementing innovative strategic solutions, with responsibility for providing 
high-quality, robust systems that facilitate search, discovery, and delivery of 
library services and resources to the entire campus. As a member of the 
Technology, Discovery and Digital Services team, the Discovery and Systems 
Librarian oversees, monitors, and administers both the functional and technical 
components of the LCR systems, including Ex Libris Alma/Primo, AtoM, ContentDM, 
EMuseum, Library Archival System, and others.   

The Discovery and Systems Librarian is expected to maintain a broad and 
detailed mastery of these services.  The incumbent actively works with 
stakeholders across the Library to assess, further develop, and enhance 
services, optimize routines and functionality to improve staff workflows and 
the user experience in public interfaces as well as explore opportunities to 
increase departmental efficiency and broader adoption. The Discovery and 
Systems Library needs to be able to effectively communicate across technology 
specialists, subject specialists and be able to translate technical information 
for non technical specialists.

The incumbent is expected to maintain awareness of developing tools for 
discovery and delivery and to contribute to the development of long term 
strategic direction for the Libraries.

As an academic staff position, appropriate participation and involvement in 
scholarship, teaching and service is expected.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Is the overall product lead for the Alma/Primo Library Services Platform (LSP)
In collaboration with others across LCR oversees and coordinates system 
integrations, develops and enhances workflows, releases updates and 
enhancements into production, and communicates with internal and external 
stakeholders as appropriate.
Manages the development of related systems for collection management, unified 
discovery, interlibrary loan (currently Relais), inventory control for the High 
Density Library (Library Archival System), AtoM, ContentDM, The Museum System 
and EMuseum (Gallery Systems), etc
Diagnoses and troubleshoots issues related to the LSP in collaboration with 
stakeholders.
Utilizes APIs to improve interoperability among systems, to enhance or automate 
backend workflows, and to optimize users discovery experiences.
Monitors and evaluates emerging technology, making recommendations for 
adoption, as appropriate
Manages authentication issues in collaboration with University IT and the 
Libraries EZProxy service

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited program in 
librarianship, or recognized equivalent.
Experience with some combination of the following: XML, APIs, web services, 
open source software development, content management systems, or other 
comparable tools
Demonstrated knowledge of IT infrastructure and cloud technology. 
Experience working with databases and SQL.
Demonstrated experience managing library based systems and services. 
Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and ability to work creatively and 
effectively as an individual and within a group. 
Demonstrated ability to deal with change, ambiguity, and complex problems; and 
to discern and understand relationships between complex library systems.
Ability to use technology creatively to address challenges, improve processes 
and innovate.
Demonstrated ability to anticipate customer needs and provide user centric 
solutions.
Demonstrated project management experience
At least two years of professional experience working with library systems.
Excellent analytical, time management, organizational, and creative 
problem-solving skills. 
Excellent oral and written communication in English is required.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Interest in exploring and evaluating new technologies and in seeking 
opportunities to share this knowledge with colleagues.
Demonstrated commitment to service and professional development.

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with academic and higher education issues and trends
Record of scholarly activity

Salary and Benefits

Position will commensurate with qualifications and experience, at either the 
rank of Assistant or Associate Librarian. The salary range for the rank of 
Assistant Librarian is $59,572 to $81,458 per annum. The salary range for the 
rank of Associate Librarian is - $71,084 to $99,679 per annum.
