SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the management of the Information Technology Department Head, the Systems 
Administrator is responsible for the development, maintenance and upkeep of the 
Library’s network, servers, and endpoint systems. The Systems Administrator 
must be able to diagnose and respond to problems with systems that are 
noticeable to a significant part of the organization and large numbers of 
patrons.  This position is a regular full-time position and is exempt from 
overtime under FLSA guidelines. The nature of the work requires evening and 
weekend hours.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

·         A bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, a 
related field, or equivalent experience and certification including the skills 
a person would have typically acquired from pursuing such a degree.

·         One year of experience administering network, server, printer, and 
desktop systems, including:

o   Microsoft Windows, Active Directory, Exchange

o   Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager

o   Microsoft Desktop Operating Systems

o   VMware vSphere and SAN technologies

o   Firewalls, Routers, switches, and access points

o   VPN configurations

o   Disk and tape based enterprise backup systems

o   Print management systems

o   Microsoft Office and other productivity applications

 

SCHEDULED HOURS AND COMPENSATION

·         Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM; occasional evenings or weekends

·         $51,300 – $62,800 per annum

·         Paid vacation time, sick leave, personal business days, holidays 
(including birthday and discretionary holiday)

·         Health Care Coverage, prescription coverage, dental insurance, long- 
and short-term disability, term life insurance, employee assistance program 
(EAP)

·         Defined contribution retirement plan with matching funds up to 5% of 
salary per annum

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Administers the library’s server and network infrastructure, 
including:

o   Wired and wireless network equipment.

o   Windows and Linux Severs (stand-alone, and virtual machines).

o   Applications and devices.

o   Enterprise backup systems.

·         Assists in crafting the library’s technology roadmap.

o   Evaluates technology product options and recommends solutions.

o   Works with the IT department and library staff to implement new solutions.

·         Maintains and supports use of staff and patron computing environments.

o   Resolves hardware, software, and network problems.

o   Diagnoses problems and coordinates problem resolution with affected staff, 
patrons, and vendors.

o   Assists in administration and maintenance of the library’s integrated 
library system.

o   Creates and maintains technical documentation for systems.

o   Assists staff with use of software, hardware, and devices.

o   Provides second-tier support for patron use of technology.

 

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Stays informed of library news and events via review of all forms of 
library communication: website, email, staff intranet, library newsletter and 
blog.  Contributes content as appropriate.

·         Serves on workgroups/committees and participates in initiatives as 
assigned, both within the library and with outside entities, partners, or 
associations.

·         Participates in staff training, committees, work groups, blogging, 
and accepts other assignments or duties in support of the library’s goals and 
objectives.

·         Enforces library policies using a polite and professional approach.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

·         Two years’ experience administering network, server, printer, desktop 
and deployment systems.

·         Strong working knowledge of:

o   Scripting and programming languages Including: SQL, PHP, Python, 
Powershell, bash, and C#.

o   Routers, switches, and wireless access points.

o   Microsoft SharePoint.

o   Veeam backup and replication.

 

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS

·         Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing which permits the employee 
to communicate in writing and verbally.

·         Sufficient vision, which permits the employee to produce and review a 
wide variety of materials in both electronic and hard copy form.

·         Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions in a 
fast-paced environment.

·         Ability to sit, stand, and walk for long periods, and the ability to 
bend, reach, stoop, or crouch.

·         Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
