I've always been inclined to use digital collections to talk about a
collection of things that have been digitized or perhaps including born
digital things that are part of a collection in an archival sort of way.
I prefer the term electronic resources for the databases and other
things...

Hi Jeremy,
I was recently recommended to Digital Ocean for simple low-cost hosting and
have been quite pleased with the service. They also have some very
easy-to-follow documentation and instructions for setting up all sorts of
basic server-side software including mediawiki
I've built digital collections on Omeka and on SobekCM (both on that
helpful foss4lib list) Omeka is definitely easy to get up and running and
you can even host a small collection free on the omeka.net site. The
drawback is in the back-end management - if you want to import a lot of
items in bulk
I have few thousand CD's and DVD's of images scanned back in the days of
more expensive server storage. I want the files on these transferred to a
hard-drive or cloud storage where I can get at the them and sort out the
keepers etc.
I have seen a lot of great home-built auto-loader machines, but
) - that way you can use a less expensive non-touch screen and get the
same or better effect. Been meaning to try this out but the time it keeps
getting away from me. Would love to hear of someone making it work.

I will contribute one particularly heartbreaking bit from my own
current metadata saga - I'm in one of these hybrid museum/research
library institutions where the library side has a aging MARC catalog
with its own issues that I won't go into at the moment. The museum
side has a commercial

The City Hostel http://www.cityhostelseattle.com/ looks pretty
interesting and not too far away for the more adventurous or
budgetarily challenged.
