ive seen a few of those as of late as well (at least 2 that i can remember)
and i dont recall ever seeing them prior (and i used to be more of an irc
junkie than i am now even ;} )

why not stick characters that are considered text format control characters
to a large number of clients (in mirc these characters are accessed via ctrl
+ [b|r|k|u]) into the list of characters not allowed in channel names?
