I think it's ok. I've tested it locally and it works and, it is only
invoked if you set the conn id so, should be ok 爛

@mik-laj any reason not to add this back? i know you removed it in the
past. for hosted service, you don't necessarily want ADC to be used, and, it
may not be feasible / desirable
