right now so I'm not sure
why we ran into it, though I can't swear the disk hasn't been full during
the past week or so.
HDFS has seemed quite slow over the past week also, I'm not sure if that's
by random or if it has anything to do with it.

trust in our setup.
My guess is that it might still have led to a crash, since it seems to be
the edits file and not the edits.new file that causes it, and since edits is
a month old. Which brings me back to my confusion regarding the roles of
fsimage, edits and edits.new.
