I got a T-Mobile prepaid card in Seattle, Washington in August of this
year. I don't think its 3G, and the version number is 38.01e. I was
able to receive and make calls and receive Text Messages using the
OpenMoko and QTopia interfaces.

I wonder why this update can't be done in the field.
Field means you. The GSM chip is upgradable by people with the
necessary equipment, which will likely mean FIC, and hopefully any
co-operating outlets in the future.

Hey all,
I've been playing with a Neo for a little while now, and unfortunately
my current 3G SIM card from ATT has a serial number that falls within
the range of doesn't work on the wiki. Yesterday I bought a pre-paid
TMobile 3G card to see if that would work, and it didn't work either.

Does anyone currently have a Neo working in the USA? As I understand it,
ATT and TMobile are the only compatible networks here for 3G, but I'm
curious what the status is on getting 3G working here in America.

Gotcha, thanks for clearing that up.

We've heard bits and pieces on this. I believe where it stands is
people are investigating and the GSM module likely needs a firmware
update to handle a SIM like yours. Back when it was clear the P0
needed a GSM firmware update, it was made more or less clear that this
isn't an update that
So the consensus is that the Neo won't work in the US if you just go an get
a new account with ATT or T-Mobile?

It seems like I've heard of people with tmobile using neo without too
much trouble, but I'm not sure if that was with a current SIM you
would get on a new account. I haven't seen a place for success reports
in the wiki, so people will have to speak up if they have it working.

Mine works with a T-Mobile SIM (non 3G).

The version number on my TMobile SIM is 39.01a and does NOT work. My
ATT SIM is listed on the wiki within the range of serial numbers that

I'm disappointed that this isn't something that's field-programmable. I

Well, as it is the GSM chip we're talking about, you might primarily
take it up with the local authorities; FCC, I believe.

you might try swapping your sim card for one of the newer ones (somehow make

With ATT, formerly Cingular when 3D SIMS were introduced,
initially there was different SIMS for 3G (UTMS) and non-3G
(GSM) devices, but my understanding is that all new SIMS are
labeled as 3G, and they work on both types of devices, at least
with ATT they do. I would suggest try a new SIM.
