Png's have metadata, but not sure if it's used by the apps.

If they both use the exact same areas, the exact same name, and they
both save it as a png then it *should* be compatible. Anything else
seems way too crazy,

similar names are not sufficient, as said above -- compare the files
(identify -verbose

1. There is not standard for offiline map archiving, so why be surprised
if some open programs use a their format to archive data?
The important is that the way how they archive the maps is full open and
fully documented.
