Elizabeth, My friends are part of a community garden in Madison, WI where the gardeners decided to put up a fence and plant blueberry and raspberry plants along the outside base of the fence. This is a way to make the fence a living part of the garden and also offer a small (but delicious) part of the harvest to the neighbors who don't participate in the garden.
