The general recommendation was the VGA mod was far better for parts life and stress on the bits. It's not so much a safety issue, it's not going to explode and there aren't really any heat, but it is more stress on the components which are fairly hard to find outside of another whole system.

I generally found the screen to be very nice to use, even at the seemingly-low refresh rate. The Trinitron really helps.
