Nah! Despite new nVidia drivers, I still get the slow-down after a
(longer) while.
In my case, it's not just the moving windows around which is slow, but
also typing, unfolding menus, scrolling etc - the whole user-interface.
If I run glxgears now (after the slowness has set in), I'm getting 10
On natty, I also downgraded Compiz to 0.8.6 using the method in #84 and
it fixed this issue (abysmal compiz/opengl performance). This appears
to be a regression between 0.8.6 and 0.9.4. I would try to bisect this
myself, but my attempts to compile compiz from source and run it have
been full of
Now thats interesting.
Last night I installed a new nVidia driver and got it working fine.
Booted up this morning - that was fine as well
After a long(!) time - several hours as opposed to 20-30 minutes, I got
the slow-down again. Logged out and in again and it seemed to work. Shut
down. Booted
5 weeks past from the promised patch (10 from the release of Natty),
kernel 2.6.38-10 just released with even an ABI bump, a good excuse to
include the fix but no :(

This can lead to an occasional complete melt-down on my system which
is manifested in one of two ways:
1) xorg goes into 100% CPU usage
2) compiz uses 100% CPU
Sometimes with the compiz variety, the system recovers somehow
although the windows are rearranged (does compiz restart?)
When I connect
Great! Thank you Thomas.

This is the main reason I always disable desktop effects/compiz/unity.
When I'm working I alt+tab very quickly. Most of the times I don't even

The problem is that the way it's done here not only you need to wait for
I have experienced this problem as well, with an Intel 965 graphics kit.
I tried the mouse-polling fixes suggested here (I often use Logitech
USB mouse), but they didn't seem to make much of a difference for me.
Today this issue had deteriorated my desktop to near-unusability. My
