What I suspect is happening here is the lightdm daemon has crashed. When it
does that CK automatically deletes the ConsoleKit sessions it owned so even
though the session and X server continue to run you wont have permission to
access things anymore. You can confirm this by running:

Okay, now the fix created a new problem. I have my Evolution window
resized and can see the window decorations, but when I minimize the
window and then click on it's icon in the Unity launcher the window
opens maximized and I have to resize again. The behavior affects other

At least for me it does not sound familiar to bug #864054 as everything from
update to synaptic to external drives is working properly. Just the
3d-acceleartion did stop and therefore unity-2d is running. But the hardware is
fully capable of 3d acceleration and a different kernel did not help at
bug #863054 seems similar

compiz frequently crashes during alt-tab switching

Compiz crashes quite frequently for me (5-10 times a day) during alt-tab
window switching.
I am not using the unity alt-tab switcher and have disabled it by
turning off all key bindings associated with it. The switcher currently
in use is the Application Switcher.
ProblemTy
Well on my machine it happens every boot time. It does not help to reboot or to
logout and log back in.
Any additional information I could provide?

I'm lowering importance because 1) it is not easy to reproduce and seems
to requires very specific conditions to be triggered 2) restarting the
system works around the problem.

The issue remains present with the last updates, and Emerald is no longer in
the repositories...
So I can no longer use Unity or every other compiz-based environment.

Note: if "screenshot" is bound to a different key (I tried with
Button3), bug is gone.
So I think the "highlight" feature (bound to Button1) is somehow in the
way and should be switched off before "taking the picture".
