I don't expect the compiz portion of this fix will be seen in an Ubuntu
release until 12.04. No need for me to have it in progress. Still
keeping the upstream portion in my name.

This happens with automatic window placement. As soon as I manually
place the window by clicking on the titlebar, the dropdowns (as well as
any other child windows) are placed correctly.

I'm having the exact symptoms as described initially in this bug.
I've seen the same problem both with nouveau as well as with nvidia proprietary

just been switching between the two for the last 2-3 months as a result
I'm not using Force Full screen redraws on repaint, and I disabled
Sync to Vblank and, for good measure, pulled a 'compiz --replace'
I started up minecraft and switched desktops. Nice and slow. But less
smooth ;).

I have a variation of this problem; not sure if it is related to this
discussion or not. It has worked for me without any tricks, for a long
time (since 11.10 was released), but it only allows me to group the
windows that belong to a single process. I typically have a couple dozen
xterm windows
Seems like an issue with Compiz (stacking issue?)

Compiz seems to be at fault here, but there's little or no info to
diagnose the issue. Can you run this command in a terminal so that debug
information gets attached:
apport-collect 877248
That would help us debug the issue. Thanks!

No need for another bug, because the code you're using isn't released

yours are important feedback that I'm considering...

I noticed this subtle stuttering too. But only after I had fixed it with
the proposed fix for bug 880707 did I notice the stuttering (after I
uninstalled my fix the stuttering became obvious).
The fix is available for testing in ppa:vanvugt/compiz
(https://launchpad.net/~vanvugt/+archive/compiz).
I will test this as soon as possible. It may take a week or so for me to
test this as my computer is currently broken.

Note to self, and Compiz developers...
I managed to fix this bug by hacking the CompTimer source priority;
lowering the priority to around IDLE level. This allows compiz time to
process all pending X events (such as mouse motion) before rendering
each frame. Unfortunately it's not a fix I can
