I think the issues that make this bug particular to compiz and unity-3d
may be entirely described by bug 917210.
I'm presently working on getting both fixes into my PPAs so Steve (et
al) can test them.

Although that may be slightly off topic, because #3 only improves
graphics speed and smoothness, while probably making CPU usage higher.

I have an N270 netbook I'm testing performance fixes on too. With that
hardware I found the best performance (by far) is with:
1. Install ppa:vanvugt/compiz
2. Install ppa:vanvugt/unity
3. Open ccsm and in Workarounds set "Force full screen redraws..." = ON
With any luck, steps 1 & 2 will be buil
Michael, I thought about it and using a debugger may be appropriate.
Because callgrind (and valgrind in general) will slow down compiz/unity
to an almost unusable speed. You won't want to run it that way for long
enough to even reproduce the gradual degradation. Also, the "gradual
degradation" will
Thanks for explaining what compiz really is.
I'm sure it's not an issue for people using "real" cpus. But for me on
my atom n270 netbook, I just can't spare the cycles.
I've switched to lubuntu desktop. I like it it. I think Unity 3D is
nice, and it was quite usable even on my hardware. But l

I know that this is offtopic, but regarding the thread mentioned above,
I personally hate Unity and I have done everything possible to disable
all its features. As a matter of fact, I find it completely useless with
the current configuration I have (cairo dock etc.), but I have never

This is on a system updated just an hour ago and based on yesterday's daily
build.
Hardinfo provides the correct information about Open GL, when mesa-utils is
installed.

The crash has happened two times. 1:st time directly after boot after upgrading
to the 3.2.0-11 kernel and in this case I was not able to file a bug report as
the keyboard wasn't working. After this I booted the system in recovery mode
and selected Resume normal boot in the menu. This worked OK.
FYI.

Thank you Daniel,
I am installing valgrind now. I have used a profiler for another

other hand, if I am attached to the running compiz with gdb, is there
a way to state the currently running function ? I would still like to

Public bug reported:
Hi!
I have made some tests with 2 monitors to try to understand how compiz is
placing windowses after second monitor is disconnected. Placement is quite
strange to be honest :)
I have to note that the same happens in compiz 0.8.x as well, so functionlity
might be the same.
The problem got fixed in a Unity upgrade, so I guess it was a Unity
problem.

Michael, to find the cause of high CPU usage you need a profiler, not a
debugger.
Most profilers need special code compiled in to your application, but Valgrind
has a plugin Callgrind that works with any existing binary (as do all valgrind
plugins):
