At some point I discovered that if you click while pressing Meta, Super
or Alt or whatever has been set as the special key, you can give focus
to icons on the desktop anyway.
It works for me at least, but does it work for you?

Same problem here, Ubuntu 14.04, Compiz
0.9.11.2+14.04.20140714-0ubuntu1, current updates.
Tried to use "focus follows mouse" (aka turning off "click to focus"),
but this is too buggy in the current version of Compiz (e.g. can't
rename files on desktop).
