My point is that the desktop is tested as a set of packages delivered
together. There are dependencies, and expectations. It's not uncommon
for users to run commands to install or remove software from their
system which they copy/

output here. That can fix a multitude of random issues.

Binary package hint: compiz
If i click the date in the top right of the screen i get the calendar
appear with a drop shadow. If I click it again, the calendar goes but
the drop shadow remains. See screenshot.

Binary package hint: compiz
Grabbed latest updates today and suddenly my laptop became very
sluggish, to the point where I was getting a screen refresh every 30s
to 60s. I rebooted and post-gdm it was still apparent, so I disabled
compiz and the issue went away.

After applying all updates to my system this morning, I was able to
start compiz and try out a number of visual effects with no problems.
