On a side note... After the crash / restart of compiz Yakuake which is mapped
to F12 does not respond to pressing the button to activate it.

try this. follow the same steps to either open a terminal from your
black screen (ctrl-alt T) or switch to a new console (ctrl-alt F1) then
type the following to reset compiz
gconftool-2 -recursive-unset /apps/compiz-1
unity --reset
if that does not work try
cd ~; rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .m
Achilies12 are you using the unity desktop environment or are you using
XFCE desktop (which is the default for Xubuntu)?
You can reset unity easily by logging into another console (ctrl-alt f1)
and typing the following:
DISPLAY=$DISPLAY:0
export DISPLAY
unity --reset
then switch back (ctrl-alt
switched to Unity 2D, only way I could use desktop again.
