After re-reading my bug description, it could also be interpreted as a
bug in compizconfig-settings-manager so I added it as an "also affects".

I just wish I knew what layer was preventing it from being a vlid

I created a new bug for compiz to keep this alive.
If you still care, please report there.

After some digging I found this:
http://dev.compiz-fusion.narkive.com/BXRBj9Xp/fusiondev-bug-545-escape-used-as-part-of-any-key-binding-has-no-effect
Where it suggests that this is by design.
This doesn't satisfy me. Reserving a lone escape is fine, but preventing Esc
with modifier keys seems

All the bugs that are related to older versions of compiz are being closed.
Since the bug still exists and it was closed due to it being old, then I need
to re-create it.
If it isn't going to be fixed for some philosophical reason, I'd like to
see it posted here and that's
To make a suggestion, if binding the Escape key is not going to produce
any result, then the interface should be configured to disallow it and a
log message should be produced for any time it is set and/or used.
So if I Click 'Grab' and Press Escape, then the binding should not
be set and a error
Hi,
yes I agree this bug is very annoying (I use Unity2D myself every day) and I do
wish we had it fixed by now, but having spent time investigating it, the cause
is not trivial (or else kick-myself obvious).
As Unity2D is being superseded by Unity for all users in Quantal, we are
not
I believe this is fixed in Unity 2D 5.12, as released in Precise.
Marking as fixed released. If anyone disagrees, please re-open.

can you give me careful steps to reproduce this? Can you please check you're
running unity-2d version 5.14 or greater? What hardware are you using?

Case of Ubuntu inside a VM is not something we can easily fix, as we
need to globally listen for any Alt key presses. There's no easy way
around this.
The tap detection code does indeed take into account all other
keypresses. The HUD should only show if you press release the Alt key
quickly, and

Hey Colin, yes I've reproduced this issue in a reasonably clean virtual
machine install. Appears that the keyboard shortcuts are incorrectly
set.
When I set that shortcut to Mod4+D (I'm using a Mac, YMMV) then I get the
desired effect.
Thanks for your investigation, it was very helpful.

@colin-law: Thanks for the reply! I've tried your steps to reproduce,
but still fail to see it. Super+D shows my desktop, Crtl+Alt+D does
nothing for me.
By any chance, are you running compiz? Or changed your keybindings? Our
code is quite straightforward for this, we watch for Super+D. We do not
Sam, after trying to work around this for two releases of Ubuntu, I
would seriously consider proposing to you if you did that! Kidding, that
would only discourage you, but in all seriousness, THANK YOU if you do
add this option. :)
