Same problem with Intel G31 GPU, compiz running on Ubuntu 11.04.
I need to log in VT1 and run $ kill -9 `pidof compiz` ; then I switch back to
VT7, unlock the screensaver and go back to work.

To complete my previous comment #2, I got an other case when I wait gnome to
lock the screen:
- wait until the monitor is going to sleep
- wait some extra time that gnome-screensaver lock the session
- move the mouse
- wait that the monitor display an image
=> See that the image is the same that b

- activate "desktop wall" plugin
- set black wallpaper
- use "Ctrl-Alt-right Key" to switch. Don't release the key
- try to identify which workspace is selected
- then to the same with white wallpaper and see that it's easier

I got this message in dmesg on my server running Ubuntu desktop 9.10.
The server has currently no attached display and has reboot 2 hours ago
(latest linux update). Metacity is running on the server (no compiz),
and there is an automatic gdm login (I use it sometime as a
mediacenter).

Summary : [Karmic] Changing resolution with compiz enable can lead to a
