I have the same problem on my new system with Mint Linux 13 using Mate.
I don't think it is a memory issue, i have plenty. When i check my
.xsession-errors file is see this message that correlates with the
blanking problem
mate_bg_crossfade_start: assertion `fade-priv-fading_pixmap != NULL'
with a little more digging I think it is this mate_bg_crossfade_start
(in ubuntu the same function is gnome_bg_crossfade_start ) IS THE
CULPRIT. There was a variable name change from fading_pixmap to
fading_surface and i guess this did not propagate to some compiz
related code. For someone in
This bug makes it particularly painful to use Google Chrome/Chromium as
reported here:
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=98200
One easy test case:
Enable the compiz benchmark plugin (compiz-plugins-extra)
Open google chrome with two tabs, one blank the other one pointing to:
I suffer from the same bug using compiz+unity. A workaround is to ask
nautilus to draw the desktop by setting:
org.gnome.desktop.background.show-desktop-icons = true
with gesettings/dconf-editor. This way the nautilus window will stay on

As it happens, I have had the problem in Classic as well, but very
infrequntly. 1 out of every 100 repetitions or so. Mostly in the
beginnin of the session, then fine for the longest time. Definitely to
live with in my case for the moment. I didn't use Unity for more than a
few hours.

I had exactly the same problem on my HP DV9000 laptop. For me it was
solved using this
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/753144/comments/55
Works perfectly now (slower than 0.86 though) using 270.41.06 NVidia
driver and a 2.6.38.6 kernel.
