I can reproduce it on laptop with integrated Intel graphics and desktop
with Radeon 5770, both with installed Ubuntu 12.04.

I can confirm this. I am getting the very same type of erratic behavior
on my laptop (without multiple monitors). Using compiz grid plugin on a
window, then moving it to different workspace with ctrl-
shift-, and then switching back to previous workspace the
window shows up in the "old" workspace.
