This was a metacity problem after all; I deleted the metacity
configuration from ~/.gconf/apps/metacity and all was well again.

Hmm .. it's been late in the night when I commented above: I meant to
say the *active* window (the one with the focus) is always sticky when I
switch to other workspaces.

OK, some more fooling around: it is actually the top window that is
always sticky and that is shown on all workspaces. When creating a brand
new user and logging into that account the problem does not appear.
Copying that brand new user's compiz configuration files to my account
does not solve the
After some more experimentation I came to realise that it is always the
last window opened that is sticky. Once window N is opened, window N-1
ceases to be sticky.
