Retried again. The debugging command : kill -9 `pgrep "gnome-settings"`; gnome-settings-daemon --debug made the patch work for Unity 3D temporarily. I had a similar output as in comment #22 (xrandr Identified monitors...etc) and the monitor switch also worked. After logout/login, the patch is

If you use compiz and set the dash/panel Blur effect to None instead of STATIC or DYNAMIC, the panel's transparency gets back to normal, yet the dash's transparency gets screwed (becomes fully transparent). For now, with STATIC and DYNAMIC BLUR, I cannot get a semi transparent panel, unless I set
