I downloaded a new .iso. same bug occurred on both booting the .iso and
booting the install.

Tried
sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_usr_bin_compiz.1000.crash
get a drop down message that ubuntu has experienced an internal error.
Nothing else.
Tried removing the *upload and *uploaded files, same thing. Nothing
past the first drop down...

Rebooted once at 3.16.0-17 O.K.
Do note the external monitor I typically use comes up with garbage all
over the screen for some time before compiz/Unity/X screen appears.
Compaq WF 1907 HP 19 1440x900. Built-in Acer screen, off, is 1368x768
I think.

Hooray! Today's login updates included: Ubuntu classic, no effects
I presume that means no Compiz? I used to turn off effects in the
System Preferences : Appearance but I don't see that window any more.
I was running about 5 to 15 minutes per Natty failure with either
classic or Unity as in

Was able to get running by Ctrl-Alt-F1, sudo service gdm stop, sudo service gdm
start
Then right click create a launcher with gnome-terminal
In gnome terminal do gnome-panel
Noticed the crash and submitted
i845G and i830 run all ordinary applications, office, internet, internet
video, ... without Compiz.
Blacklisting Compiz for them is just fine with me, since I usually check
on install and set System Preferences Appearance Visual Effects None
anyway.
Of course I'm interested in running
Karmic A5 CD on my i845 couldn't get by the first boot screen. Nothing
on the keyboard worked. The CD did boot and run on my two ati pc's so
the CD burn was O.K. A5 is the same as daily build 20090902.
Daily build CD 20090905 booted and died on the i845. I usually have to
put in nomodeset on

Ubuntu developers simply blacklist compiz on 8.10 Intrepid and don't
start it on the affected processors. Same thing on 9.04 jaunty and 9.10
karmic. Compiz won't even start on the later ubuntu's for video drivers
that don't support compiz.
