Yup, it sounds like you have/had a kernel DRM issue.
Official support for Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail has ended. Does
this issue still occur in Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr?

The VDPAU problem on your desktop might be fixed in the just-released
NVIDIA 270.41.19 pre-release driver. It supposedly fixes a bug in the
VDPAU presentation queue that could cause temporary hangs.
I'm not sure about the main problem on your other machine.

Does this still happen with Catalyst (FGLRX) 11.5?
Also, the open-source Fusion graphics support has been fixed in the
upstream 2.6.39 kernel if you want to try that instead of FGLRX - see
