Does anybody know if this is fixed in 12.10? I kinda wanted to stay with
LTS, but if this has improved I would be willing to live dangerously...

Same problem here on 12.04.01.
This is a regression, it used to work perfectly at some point.
happens with built-in mplayer as well as with mplayer and mplayer2 from
motumedia, so I blame compiz (and that had more regressions than I can count).

issue was already present in natty, still present in precise. I didn't
notice it was related to the combination of expo and grid, good tip. But
I want both! They're the most useful plugins for big screens!!

I also have this problem. Apparently it's actually intended
functionality, but I just find it annoying and stupid. I mean it's
reasonable to only maximize to a single screen, but when resizing, it
just refuses to do something that I explicitly request. That's just
wrong. That being said, I would
