Heres another datapoint for this problem. I was running 9.10 and switched monitors to a 1440x900 monitor and compiz started hogging cpu. So I upgraded to 10.10 but no joy. Googling around someone mentioned the same problem with a laptop and external monitor and that disconnecting wireless then
