I'm still getting this. I not running anything custom. I just updated
once again today. I cannot find this bug anywhere.
I'm running with the following graphics...
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
compiz --re
looks like an issue with my custom rolled kernel. Works okay in the
stock karmic kernel. Sorry.

Updated today on my intel atom littlefalls2 system and compiz broke for
me as well. I hadn't updated in a week.
#compiz --replace
Checking for Xgl: not present.
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback
/var/log/Xorg.0.log

KMS, composite, and UXA seem to be okay, so this sounds like a compiz
bug. Can you please attach ~/.xsession-errors after a failed attempt to
start compiz? How did you try to enable it? (Start by default, as in
Jaunty, or in the system preferences menu, etc.)?

After applying all updates to my system this morning, I was able to
start compiz and try out a number of visual effects with no problems.
