Actually the entire Visual Effects tab is an Ubuntu creation so there is
no upstream. We wipe your settings and go back to sane defaults because
if you've broken something it's a simple way to get back to something
that works. We probably don't wipe enough settings when making this
switch, actually
Ok, I'll file a bug. It appears (from looking at other screenshots) that
changing the profile, if it worked, would give me access to more
features, hopefully including the window grouping. I'll file a bug
regarding it, although if it doesn't include all the settings that ccsm
does I'd still conside
You should file a separate bug for the simple-ccsm issues. I was saying
to install it because it gives you the Custom option in the Visual
Effects tab. You can still use ccsm like usual to setup said effects.

Also, simple-ccsm doesn't offer many of the features that ccsm does that
I use on a daily basis (window grouping, etc).
There is no explanation of what "Profile" means, nor does the Help
button provide any of this information.

By design? Ugh...ok...then why not at a big warning message in red
letters on the main page of ccsm saying so? This can be very bewildering
when not expected.

That's by design. If you want to make changes and have them stick
install the 'simple-ccsm' package so the Custom option appears in the
Visual Effects tab. That one will not change your settings when you
switch back and forth.
