Hooray! Today's login updates included: Ubuntu classic, no effects
I presume that means no Compiz? I used to turn off effects in the
System Preferences : Appearance but I don't see that window any more.
I was running about 5 to 15 minutes per Natty failure with either
classic or Unity as in
Indeed, because it's not possible to run Unity without effects. That's
the point of the classic mode. :)

enable apport so the next time this happens it will offer to submit a
crash report. That report will give us the information needed to solve
this issue. As apport will create a new bug report I've closed this one.

Logged out of classic logged into Unity and got the same error again in
kern.log:
Jan 10 21:49:48 localhost kernel: [ 5869.095588] compiz[4476]: segfault
at 4 ip 054cc30b sp bf924860 error 4 in r300_dri.so[54b4000+2fa000]
so it doesn't appear to be gnome-panel vs. Unity related.
