Well, I'm making progress. Tried all suggestions w/o success but found the root of the issue accidentally during the process. Outlook Express 6 only works when the user has administrative rights. OE6 gives error the messages when trying to use it as a limited user. I have been able to reproduce

John, I think that the best thing to do is to create a new profile. I've had some very strange bugs mess with Tbird and SeaMonkey [I usually use the latest beta with SM so I expect that, but my Tbird is the latest release.] There are probably damaged files in the prefs, but it's hard to deter
