By the time you figure in the cost of the MB, CPU, new RAM, etc... you may be
better off looking at Dell's outlet if not their brand new desktops. But if
you want to do it yourself, I say go NewEgg.

I was able to upgrade my system for $150 after rebates. New MB, dual
core processor, 2GB memory, and power supply. Microcenter has some
good deals too, especially now.
Staying with XP was a prime motivator for upgrading rather than buying
new (Vista). All totaled, I got a better deal upgrading.
You get longer warranty on almost everything, 3 to 5 years on hard drives.
If you are comfortable building your own, it is the only way to go, you'll
save over pc's and a lot over macs.

Geeks has some decent deals on refurbished
computers Name brands that are mainly being sold
for cost of the OS. I got one of my members one
of these this past summer as all she had was an
old gateway with a 98 license. For the cost of
this computer (HP) she got a whole new (used) system

You probably can't move your XP to a new motherboard. You must buy a new
copy of Windows. Check your EULA.
Are you saying there are circumstances in which if your motherboard
goes bad, that you are not allowed to replace it and use the same
operating system? Is this something that is automatically checked or
you just have to know?
