I'm an independent book and paper conservator from Israel.
I have come across Akapad (Germany) cleaning sponges (white) for the
surface cleaning of paper.
In their website (
https://www.aka-art.de/en/dry-cleaning/akapad-cleaning160sponges.html) the
company says they are made from latex and other materials - "In addition to
synthetic latex, cross-linked canola oil and/or castor oil also serve as a
raw material otherwise known as factice. A special chlorine-free and
sulfur-free factice is utilized for the production of white akapads."
The Akapad are also sold on PEL and other vendors, which indicate they are
safe and PH neutral.
I saw different articles on painting conservation indicating their safe use
for dry cleaning.
I'd like to know if there is any opinion on the subject regarding their
safety of use for the surface cleaning of archival materials and length of
useful time. Have you found any harm such as yellowing of the paper after
their use? There is a range of Akapad white, it seems that the gentlest is
"white pure". But would love to hear about "white soft" as well.
Thanks in advance!
