To celebrate the acquisition and conservation of the spectacular Armada Portrait of Elizabeth I, Royal Museums Greenwich will be holding a major two-day conference focussing on the production methods, materials and conservation of both Tudor paintings and the various decorative arts commonly associated with them.
The programme includes speakers covering collections and projects at RMG, Tate, Historic Royal Palaces, Fitzwilliam Museum, National Portrait Gallery, National Trust, Waddesdon Manor, Fan Museum, and Royal Collection Trust. Day One: A full day of talks will focus on recent ground-breaking technical art historical research on Tudor paintings and miniatures by Hilliard, Isaac Oliver, George Gower and others, along with fascinating case studies of conservation treatments. The last session of the day will be dedicated to a general panel discussion based around questions and topics submitted by delegates, followed by a wine reception in the stunning and newly restored Queen's House. Day Two: The morning talks will branch out to look at the production methods of a wider range of decorative arts, from armour to globes, as well as examining alternate methods for presentation in which the restoration of an object’s original appearance is not an option. In the afternoon, delegates will make their way over the road to the site of the Old Royal Naval College where they will have the choice to participate in either a guided tour of the newly-discovered archaeological remains of the Tudor palace, or a tour up the scaffolding in the Great Hall to view the amazing conservation work that is be undertaken on Thornhill’s Painted Hall decorative scheme.
