The Private Press & Fine Bindings Collection held at Special Collections
and Archives was put together by the Cardiff Public Library and acquired
by Cardiff University in 2010. It is probably the best such collection
(both in terms of quantity - c. 2,000 items - and quality) in the UK, at
least for Britain's 'Golden Age' of private presses from the 1890s to
the Second World War. For decades it remained uncatalogued and
effectively hidden from public view. This lecture will reveal something
of its wealth: its range - all the major British private presses plus
the leading foreign presses - and uncovers the highlights, before
explaining why a public library invested so much in assembling such a
collection of relatively luxury items.
Professor Judi Loach trained as an architect before working in freelance
journalism and exhibition design (in direct contact with commercial
printers). She became a volunteer printer operating hand presses before
taking a PhD in architectural history. As one of those who campaigned to
save the Cardiff Rare Books Collection from auction (and thus dispersal)
she was delighted to discover these hidden treasures within this
extraordinary collection.
