Pre-Program Training Position in Objects
After successful acceptance of our last pre-program conservation assistant to conservation graduate school, SF Art Conservation is offering a unique paid training opportunity for an exceptional candidate actively working towards a career in the field of art conservation. This training position is designed for a candidate who is seeking to enter conservation graduate school, already has some experience in conservation, is primarily focused on working with objects and sculpture, and already has a work visa for the US. Working as conservation assistant to the company and based at our Oakland studio, the candidate will be supervised on individual treatments and in large team projects with our studio objects and the outdoor sculpture departments. Opportunities to work with our painting conservation department on paintings, frames and mural projects are also possible, depending on studio workflow. The position will be for a minimum of four days per week, and as well as being paid, is entitled to the benefits of a full time employee, subject to the company policy. The candidate will be assisted in finding internships for the fifth day of the week in Bay Area museums with whom we have close working relationships, in order to develop a range of skills and experience. The candidate must be able to demonstrate significant progress towards the academic coursework required for graduate school admission, including having completed at least one year of the chemistry requirement. In addition, studio art and art history requirements must be partially completed and studio art must demonstrate a high level of proficiency. The candidate must be prepared to enroll this Fall in order to complete the outstanding coursework, particularly in chemistry. They will be expected to be highly organized, efficient, able to work successfully in team environments, and have outstanding hand and painting skills. SF Art Conservation is focused on objects, sculpture and paintings conservation, and serves a range of clients that include museums, City institutions and major private collections. The candidate will gain experience on a broad range of materials from different periods, both in the studio and onsite. We have a particular focus on contemporary and modern artworks and the candidate should have an interest in these periods.
