We've upgraded successfully to 1.1-alpha-2 - performance appears to be much 
improved for us. I'd recommend considering an upgrade for other 1.1-alpha-1 
users.

the release improvements mostly came from redback making sure it was
using the right cached rbac and user stores, transparent to
continuum....and then a couple of places in continuum itself that also
needed to be updated to those cached stores as well, also transparent
to the user.

(ie, yes there are performance improvements in many key page areas)

as for upgrading, that would depend on the database you were using, if
you were using the embedded derby one then you just need to copy the
database over into the right spot in the   new version, if your using
something like postgres than it would just be a matter of pointing at
the database with the new version.
