------- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-02-01 06:07 -------
In watching the loading of KDE with "Top", it seems that the real problems with
memory going away apparently start when krootwarning is loaded, and then goes
downhill from there as panel applets(korgac, klipper, and one other) are loaded.
Once again, this situation eats up all available RAM and all Swap space. Memory
does not seem to be freed at this time. This *may*(I emphasize *may* very
strongly) be a kdeinit problem. Just a possibility. Several times there have
been what seems to be a large number of instances of kdeinit loaded and not exiting.

In several instances of loading KDE, this low memory situation has led to a core
dump and reboot of X, taking it back to kdm. I am also running the latest cooker
version of X.

description:
I am running the absolutely freshest KDE 3.1 cooker installations. Machine is an
AthlonXP 2000+, Asus A7N266-VM/AA motherboard, 512meg RAM(482meg RAM due to
video mem pool) and 409 meg swap partition, I am using the 2.4.20-2 kernel, due
to the fact that it does a fine job of supporting Nvidia's video and motherboard
drivers.

On loading of KDE, I run into a situation where Available RAM is quickly used up
completely and the system goes into disk swapping. Soon after that, all
available swap space is used up completely. Daemons such as kwrited, klipperd,
and korgac cannot load. Performance, after the long loadup, is quite degraded,
with occasional freezes of the mouse due to low memory.

No user-defined GUI enhancements or customizations have been performed.
