Honestly I don't understand why problems with ld.so.conf (whether
can't prepend or not the default lib paths to /lib /usr/lib is related to this

The xpdf segfaults are caused by current (0.93.36) version of lesstif.
The following version of lesstif fixes the problems with XPDF and your
(and other) PDF files. Try it too:

Indeed in 8.2 was OK. Furthermore the problem seems staying in KDE,
as if you take newer Imagemagick and compile in 8.2 or 9.0 KDE
you get "display" working from menu ev

Are you trying to produce a statically linked binary? In
that case you probably would have to provide also -lpng.
