Beta 2 installed just fine on a Dell Inspiron 7000 but it will not pass
lilo - it is stucked at Lilo 21.7

This is a known xcdroast problem - read the comments on the xcdroast.org
site.
You have to go back one release - but only root can launch it after that.

Actually you have to install 3.0.5-9 first, it will allow you to install 4.0
I did have the same problem.
