I had (and still have) precisely the same problem with the exception
that root is sda2 and not 7. That doesn't matter, the problem is the
kernel doesn't have correct module builtin for the scsi host adapter
(module for mine being aic7xxx) and therefore does not recognize it.

combination of firmware and aic7xxx(_old if needed). Have u had
