I've never seen an 'unknown error' message box but this reminds me, I did notice
that shutdown from GNOME didn't work when logged in from gdm. When started just

My security level is standard (SECURITY=2 in /etc/sysconfig/system).
Perhaps i could try with kdm to see if the bug remains with gnome.
