the alsa driver snd-intel8x0, which is the default driver in kernel
2.4.22-10mdk, seems to work again. GREAT!!! no problems with realplayer anymore.

With the same sound card, when I log in KDE, aplay
/usr/share/sounds/KDE_Startup.wav segfaults, and then /dev/dsp becomes unusable.
