I should have double-checked first, but it appears that there is
no devel package as I thought. I don't have it on my system and
'perl -MCPAN -e shell' works for me.

I am wondering about the perl installation that comes with Mandrake 7.2.
Apparently it is doing something very strange, something I've never seen
