If this is the case. Check if .Xauthority belongs to the user. If not

After I installed XFree86-4.1.0-1mdk I restarted the X server and a
bunch of the fonts were screwed up... I then suspected 'xfs' (the
font server), so I did a '/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs restart' then
restarted the X server and everything was fine...
