I just installed the latest 5/23 beta build, and I found that while the MS
Intellimouse is a valid entry for my mouse (I have it, but it was not
recognized automatically), selecting it makes my mouse go whacko - mouse
flies all over the screen and it's not useable any more.

This sounds like what happens when gpm is still enabled. Try disabling gpm.
