It seems as if the installer created a permissions problem. I created a brand new user. When I tried to login as this new user under KDE (using kdm), I still got the same message about being unable to start the DCOPs server. Of course, as root all was well.
Again, this was an upgrade from 8.2beta1. Just FYI...
