/have been using the Mozilla 1.0 for quite a while now straight out of
the mozilla fto site..
works great.

why don't you try www.mozilla.org, and use their packages? ( or .tar.gz
files)?
for example i'm using full cooker, but i still use mozilla from
www.mozilla.org, because java doesn't work with cooker-mozilla ( which
is compiled with gcc3.x ( 3.1?))..
